The latest chapter reveals yet another twist in Takaba’s battle with Kenjaku, which has subverted shonen expectations throughout. The cheerful combat adopts an entirely new direction in the last three pages with the emergence of Yuta Okkotsu.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Chapter #243 discloses that Yuta was able to succeed in chopping off Kenjaku’s head because Takaba diverted attention. Just when Takaba and Kenjaku’s comedic skit is coming to an end, Yuta gets up on him and slices him before he can apply the Reverse Cursed Technique.
Although it was a brilliant ruse to distract Kenjaku and keep him from realizing Yuta’s presence till the end, Kenjaku might not be out of the woods yet. Even though Kenjaku has been beheaded, the chapter concludes on a mysterious, menacing note that raises the possibility that he has another plan.
Kenjaku Could Still Be Alive Right Now
Despite Kenjaku being a thorough and crafty man, and probably has a strategy prepared in for such a situation, Yuta was able to deceive Kenjaku employing Takaba for the time being. As Chapter #243 closes, Kenjaku is on the verge of passing away and makes mention of leaving a will. This does not augur successfully for Yuta and the sorcerers trying to thwart his intentions. The simplest and most obvious solution seems to be for Kenjaku to swap bodies, but it’s unclear how this would impact his strategies that involve Tengen given that Geto’s Cursed Technique appears to be a key component of Kenjaku’s scheme.
On the other hand, it appears that the components of Kenjaku’s plan are already in place, so it’s possible that his backup plan will take an entirely different turn. Given that Kenjaku’s brain remains functional, he probably has a lot of options left to him, such as dispelling all of the Cursed Spirits within his body, letting him die spectacularly if necessary, or producing sufficient distractions.
Takaba’s Future Remains Undecided
Takaba’s destiny is also left unclear in Chapter #243, when he is seen smiling and laying on the ground at the conclusion of his act with Kenjaku, before Yuta comes in for the kill. Though it’s unclear if Takaba has passed away or is just passing the time, the expression on his face points to the latter.
Although many fans anticipated that Takaba would take over the show and beat Kenjaku, the fact that he made it through the affair unharmed might be enough consolation given Jujutsu Kaisen’s track record of brutally eliminating characters. Over the span of the fight with Kenjaku, Takaba has grown to be very dear to many fans, and they can only pray that he isn’t actually dead.
Still, the conflict with Kenjaku proved to be a welcome diversion from the norm, restoring much of the humor and lightheartedness that Jujutsu Kaisen had lost. Still, there will be plenty of action in the next chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen because the fight to oppose Sukuna is not yet over, no matter how the fight with Kenjaku ends up.
